Kostuming Korner

This quarter we've decided to take a look at rank pins. This is due to an increasing amount of inquiries on where to get them. But before you go do an internet search, or log on to e-bay, there's another inexpensive alternative...

Why not make them yourselves...

All you need is the following:

A Dowel (The same diameter as a US or Canadian Quarter).
A Saw of some kind
A Ruler
A Pin (and backing)
A Strong Glue
Paints
Clear Laquer
And the rank insignia

Cut your Doweling into 1/4 inch widths (This will make the base for the pin on one side, and the painted insignia on the other).

Paint the background color (black, red, what have you) on the pin (all surface areas).

Trace or paint the desired rank insignia on one face of the cut dowling.

Laquer the face and back to keep the paint from rubbing off.

Glue the pin on the opposite side of the insignia.

Place the finished rank pin on your costume.

And then enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you've created a rank pin.
